Hi Virginia,

Great point, and sorry if this is not clear.

Typically, and from what we have observed the majority of products that come with rechargeable Lithium Ion (or even Nickel Cadmium) batteries are “not changeable” according to the manufacturer eg. face shavers, body boomers, bikini trimmers, head shavers etc. The reason that is usually given is that the battery is contained well within the electronics of the product and is then sealed to be waterproof and for safety (we will let our readers decide who they believe 🙂 ).

If you are feeling brave though, and have some technical knowhow, you can usually google how to replace the battery in your specific product. This will of course will void your warranty!

We have an article that discusses the different types of rechargeable batters and how best to care for them.

In essence, you are buying a VERY expensive disposable toothbrush.
That being said, I am a Sonicare devotee & resolve —somewhat— the issue by buying the least expensive unit when it goes on sale for around $30. Works out to about $15 a year…about what you’d spend replacing decent manual toothbrushes. Also, generic brush heads work fine!
Nevertheless, I despise Sonicare’s strategy of planned obsolescence. There is NO valid reason besides profits for not allowing batteries to be user replaceable batteries

Hey Nick,

Thanks for the feedback, yes it is a shame that the Smilex no longer seems to be available.

The Emmi-dent looks like a great option, thanks for suggesting it. For those who are interested, you can read more about the Emmi-dent on Amazon via the following link -> https://geni.us/emmidentultrasonic

Kind Regards,
Lisa

Even tried Amazon. Instead I found the Megasonex toothbrush on Wikipedia (ultrasonic toothbrushes) and bought one from Hong Kong. Love it. Lasts over a month on one charge. Feels solid, small and light. My hygienist told me that my teeth looked like she just cleaned them the last time I was there. A bit expensive, though. About $190 bucks including delivery.
From what I can see, there are (or where) only 3 truly ultrasonic (working on 1.6MHz) toothbrushes on the world market: Smilex, Megasonex and Emmi-dent. Check them out.
